SA 8000:2008, Social Accountability Management System

The SA 8000 standard is a quality measure that was developed in 1997 by the Council on Economic Priorities Accreditation Agency (CEPAA). The charter is a standard measure for social accountability that measures the extents at which corporate organizations have taken their legitimate role in society. The charter is designed under the world human rights convention as well as the International Labor Organization for children and other human rights foundations.

Aside from overseeing corporate responsibility, it aims at achieving rights for workers under the global standard as well as looking at some of the acts organizations have done towards complying with the local labor laws and policies.

The requirements that have been spelled out by the charter are very straightforward and include the following:

  • Complete condemnation of child labor and any related practice
  • Issue of health and safety during working times is a foundational pre-requisite
  • Outlaws any incidents that may amount to forced labor and has further developed mechanisms to deal with the situation should it occur.
  • Bestows a right to every person involved in production to belong to a trade union in order to increase the bargaining power of the respective workers.
  • The charter also outlaws any form of discrimination in the production chain on the basis of gender, race, color or ethnicity.
  • Requires organizations to formulate a work program that will not exceed 48 hours a week. This is significantly important in making sure that there is fairness in the way duties are allocated
  • The charters also constitute a clause that compels organizations to provide sufficient remuneration for their workers. Furthermore the SA 8000 requires organizations to facilitate effective auditing of this system to ensure that the rights of workers are guaranteed.
  • The SA 8000 also requires organizations to document objectively their social responsibility record.
  • Certification under the SA 8000 will involve more than just one ISO certification and in fact,it may employ other charters if necessary.
